Age Old Remedies

by Eric Novak on December 9, 2007

It’s Christmas time and, as usual, we have a live tree in the corner of our living room. It’s a Balsam fir – the most fragrant of all Christmas trees, featuring short, soft needles. The only problem is, I won’t be able to smell it. That’s right. I’ve got a nasty Christmas cold!

Normally people get a cold a couple of times a year, but I was long overdue. A few weeks ago, I noticed the cold season was in full swing when my friends started getting sick; first Jenna, then Delaine, then my Aunt Joan, and then my sisters! Mom tried to get me to take some natural remedies, even though I wasn’t sick yet – her attempt to keep me from coming down with a real hum-dinger. But why take medicine if you aren’t sick? I resisted all her efforts to make me take those infernal cold remedies.

Last week, I really thought I was getting sick because I had a scratchy throat and watery eyes. I told Elizabeth that I was going to keep a hit list with all the names of the people who got me sick, but it turns out that I was just feeling bad from staying up late writing.

Today was the day of reckoning, however! I know that I’m sick. I have a runny nose and I feel run down. I usually like to just wait a cold out, but I’m going to have to take some sort of medicine real soon. In our kitchen cabinets we have several natural remedies that taste bad enough to make your head spin, thus rendering you unconscious and making you forget that you were sick in the first place. The worst of these is Grapefruit Seed Extract. I really hate this stuff – even if it is supposed to be strong enough to kill strep throat in just a few doses. I mean grapefruit (without sugar) is bad enough, but Grapefruit Seed Extract is so bitter that you have to drink it with orange juice to cover the obnoxious taste! I’ve taken it a couple of times with just plain water and, whew, it’s nasty!

Now don’t get me wrong, I have never been squeamish about taking medicine. I mean, if you can swallow a little pill by chugging it down with something else it can’t be too bad, right? Definitely not compared with what they used to do in the old days. After reading about some of these remedies on the internet, I think I’ll go take some Grapefruit Seed Extract!

To get rid of a wart: kill a black cat and burying it under the light of a full moon.

To get rid of a cold: stay in bed and keep a mustard plaster on your chest.

To get rid of a boil, use lard and mix a snuff to make a paste; apply and cover

To cure the measles: boil corn fodder and make a tea.

For tonsillitis/sore throat: put three drops of kerosene on a teaspoon of sugar and take for three nights;

To cure the chicken pox, lie in the chicken coop and let a black chicken fly over you.

Ahh, sorry you are sick..I will be praying for your healing.

Taking grapefruit extract isn’t so bad when compared with laying in a chicken coop and letting a black chicken fly over you huh?? *LOL*

Hope you get better soon!!

Another brief comment from el Mio!

You use GSE too? Everyone we’ve ever talked to hasn’t heard of it, and I totally agree (we all do) it’s more or less revolting. One thing we like to do is choke it down (in plain water) then eat a spoonful of Nutella. The prospect of Nutella afterwards helps more than one would expect. I actually started having cold symptoms a couple weeks ago and started to take that blasted stuff but I chickened out. Thankfully I had a very mild cold and it left before the week was out. I hope yours goes away as quickly as mine did. :)

Sincerely, Mellie

Wow!The one for sore throats doesn’t sound very fun to take, but maybe it works.Have you tried it?I get sore throats often,And I’ve had strep throat twice! They’re horrible!
I’m not so sure If I’d get desperate enough to try that though!
Interesting post!

Hey, sorry it has taken me all week to get back to you! Haha I am not usually like this. lol. Anyway. Those are interesting “cure statements”. I dont think I would kill a cat though just cause of a wart! Eck. Thats why God had men invent band aids ;)

Slowly but surely I am eating less and less meat. LOL! But I still gotta have my chicken! I am just glad I can eat my potatoes lol!

Oh then I shall get on to reading those books. lol! I was going to read ‘Twilight’ by Stephanie Meyer, but after I got the book from the library I realized how evil that book and the others are.. So I decided against it.

TTYL!

“To cure the chicken pox, lie in the chicken coop and let a black chicken fly over you.”

Oh yeah, whenever I’d come down with Chicken Pox, this always worked. Then there came the year when we didn’t have a chicken coop! That year I had three major cases of Chicken Pox (or was it the rash I get from not eating my chickens’ organic eggs?)!

Well, uh, at least I know this one is true…

“For tonsillitis/sore throat: put three drops of kerosene on a teaspoon of sugar and take for three nights”

My throat was so bad, that I went through a WHOLE GALLON OF KEROSENE IN ONE MONTH!!!
…My mind has never be the same since…

But man, let me tell you, it sure fixed my throat!

:D

Man, too bad about you being sick and all. If I were you, I’d try the “eating peanut butter on the beach” trick. It’ll kick a cold faster than a Microwave!
Hmm… too bad you don’t live near a beach (and no, Michigan Lake does not count).
;)

Ok, haha, for real, eat a bunch of oranges. That always fixes my cold.

I hope you’ll be feeling better soon! Some of those old remedies sound awful!
When my grandfather had a sore throat, he used to smother his neck with goose grease and then tie a smelly sock round it! Ugh!!

Hi Eric, I am sorry that you are unwell at the moment and that is horrible. I know how you feel as I started coughing yesterday morning and I started to get a sore throat. I purchased some Echinacea with Elderbuy & Honey, but like you I left it too late and should have started taking this a few weeks ago.

I have to admit that I am actually going out to buy Day Nurse and Night Nurse (which are not natural remedies) but I need something to work right away especially as I am going away on Friday and have a pretty full week ahead of me – totally the wrong time to get sick, yuck.

I will go to the local Natural Health Food store to see if I can purchase Grapefruit Seed Extract but I am not sure if this is available in England.

I pray that you start to feel better soon
Blessings

Hey Eric,

Another thing that some times help is mega-dosing on vitamin C… and lots of water.

Hope you’re feeling better soon!
